At least half of the team members should be from outside the event area: sales and marketing, engineering, maintenance, production control, warehouse and materials, management, sister plants, front office.
Ideal number of team members is 7-8. More than that becomes difficult to manage.
If this is a shop floor Kaizen, have at least two team members be operators.
The team leader should have prior Kaizen event experience as a co-leader or team leader.
The co-leader should have had prior Kaizen event experience as a team member.
Ask for volunteers.
Try to include outside suppliers or customers, people from other plants or even from other companies.
Select members who are demonstrably creative.
If this is a union plant, include union executives on the team.
If maintenance people are available, include them on the team. If not, make sure that they are advised about the event and that they are available on an as-needed basis.
Select people who have an affinity for the shop floor.
