Tied to the previous slide, it is important as much as possible to gather key metrics prior to the Kaizen event. This may not always be possible, but if data is to be collected during the event it should be done asap. In general, not having any data prior to the event is also a red flag.
Example of when data cannot be gathered ahead of time: A setup reduction event would normally involve documenting the setup steps and times. This would become the baseline measurement prior to improvements, and this information would probably not be available ahead of time.
Note another technique used above. Some metrics may be hard to quantify, like the benefits of inventory accuracy or the cost of late deliveries. What we did in this case was to estimate the dollar value of these measurements ($10,000 per % point of inventory accuracy and $2,000 per late order). These cost estimates were discussed and agreed-upon with the management and Kaizen team during the week, so that there were no surprises during the report-out. Get consensus on this approach ahead of time. Also stress that these number are for management purposes only, and do not show up on the P&L.
