The rest of the plant must continue to be productive during the Kaizen event Work closely with maintenance to plan the potential need for their time. Plan ahead for any materials that may be needed. Try to get maintenance formally on the team Some companies hire outside contractors, so as to not disrupt normal production needs

Some companies do not have extra support personnel, so they hire outside assistance during the Kaizen event. These outside contractors will normally work on factory maintenance, so that the internal maintenance team can be freed up to support the Kaizen event.

Maintenance is usually not needed until the second or third day. The maintenance team should have some idea of the work that will be asked of them, and they should be prepared, if necessary, to move heavy machines and equipment. Having a maintenance person on the Kaizen team can be a great help in coordinating the maintenance activities.

Note to maintenance: Keep a record of the items needed during the Kaizen, and begin to develop a checklist. This will be very helpful in planning for future Kaizen events. Remember that the Kaizen effort is not a single event, but is intended to become a part of the company culture.
