One of the tools that we use when we are starting on our Kaizen journey is called Value Stream Mapping, abbreviated VSM. A VSM is a flow-chart for a product family that shows the flow of information and material from suppliers to customers. The VSM is used to document the current state (warts and all) and can then be used to create a vision of the future. The future state map will show the process as it could be, once potential improvements have been implemented.
